1. How do I know which size of breast implants is right for me?
There are two major factors that your surgeon will consider with you before making a final decision. These are 1) Your natural breast base measurement, and 2) the size and look you desire. It’s important that you are both satisfied with the outcome and that your body’s measurements and contour fit your new breasts.
2. Will getting breast implants prevent me from having kids or breastfeeding in the future?
Breast implants do not affect your ability to have children. Implant placements, when done correctly, do not affect your breast tissue and body muscles. Milk production and breastfeeding will happen as naturally as they are meant to.
3. I’m an avid exerciser. What will my recovery period be like after getting a breast lift?
You will be sedated during the surgery, and given post-operative painkillers afterward. You can expect to get back to your normal daily routine in as little as two or three days. Any kind of strenuous activity or high impact exercise should wait until at least two or three weeks to be safe. Within four weeks, women who are accustomed to weight lifting can be working out normally again.
4. Which type of implants is safer? Saline or silicone?
They are considered equally safe. The difference between these two types of implants is in their filling. Saline implants have sterile salt water, and silicone implants get their shape from silicone gel. Whether you choose saline or silicone is a matter of personal preference, as the shapes vary.
5. What is a “gummy bear” breast implant?
This is the newest type of approved implants for breast augmentation. They have a more firm shape and resemble gummy bears, thus the name. Since they are new to the US market, they can be pricier.
6. How does having breast implants interfere with getting a mammogram?
Normally, only implants placed above your breast muscle might interfere with mammography readings, but this is on a case-to-case basis. If this is a concern or if you have a high risk of breast cancer, you can always opt for sub-muscular implants. This is where the breast implant is placed behind the muscle, and will not interfere with a mammogram.
7. Can I expect my insurance plan to cover breast augmentation?
A medical insurance plan is usually only for reconstructive surgery, not cosmetic reasons. Your insurance plan may be able to cover breast surgery in full or in part if your health is directly affected — if you are having treatments for breast cancer or need breast reconstruction after an accident, for example. It is best to consult your insurance plan and find its specifications.
