Chemical Peels: Remove Damaged Outer Layers of the Skin

The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world, and was performed in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to help people achieve smoother, more beautiful skin. Today, chemical facial peels are popular because they offer nearly immediate results and can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical Peels Remove damaged outer layers of the skinA chemical peel is a treatment in which an acid solution is used to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin. The regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.  Some types of chemical peels can be purchased and administered without a medical license, however we advise you to seek assistance from a licensed medical professional on the specific type of chemical peel that would benefit you. Typically administered as a facial peel, a chemical peel enhances and smoothes the texture of the skin, making it an effective treatment for facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation.

Types of Chemical Peels Offered

At Bella Rosa Rejuvenation clinic, we offer several types of chemical peels. For most clients, we prefer to use an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) peel, such as a glycolic or lactic acid chemical peel. AHA peels are one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin, and likely will take multiple sessions to achieve desired results. No downtime is required for AHA peels, and the mild side effects include stinging, dryness, redness, mild skin peeling and skin irritation. For an enhanced result, AHA peels can be performed immediately after a microdermabrasion with our DiamondTome Microdermabrasion system. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) peels, such as salicylic acid peels, are also offered at our clinic. BHA peels control sebum excretion, acne as well as remove dead skin cells to a certain extent better than AHAs due to a deeper penetration of the BHA into the skin. BHA peels are typically used to control acne and oily skin types. Caution is used with this peel, however, as not all skin types can safely undergo this type of chemical peel. Like AHA peels, BHA peels can be performed after a microdermabrasion to enhance results. Retinoic Acid chemical peels are derived from retinoids, which is the active ingredient used in the well-studied topical creams Retin-A or tretinoin. Composed of a stronger formulation of retinoic acid, this peel penetrates deeper than the BHA peel and is used to remove scars as well as wrinkles and pigmentation problems. Retinioc acid peels are typically left on the client for several hours and then washed off. Clients can expect redness and skin irritation the next day, and will begin peeling on day 3. This peel will cause you to be sensitive to the sun, so a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock will be recommended after having this peel. Our unique Bellanage Chemical Peel is designed for all skin types, including darker skin types who are not great candidates for traditional chemical peels. The Bellanage peel offers stimulation of collagen production, improvement of skin tone and texture, and diminishment of fine lines and pigmentation. Please visit the Bellanage Chemical Peel page for more information. Your provider will use a specific formula for your chemical peel based on the characteristics of your skin and your desired results. Bella Rosa offers the following peels:

  • Salycilic 30%
  • Lactic/ Niacin
